This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book. Digital Media Primer is designed for students from all disciplines interested in learning the foundational concepts and basic techniques in digital media production. The Second edition has been expanded so that while readers learn the concepts and techniques of digital media production, they will also learn basic computer programming skills. The Primer is not tied to a specific application program like Flash or Photoshop; instead, the author introduces tools and techniques using a task-based approach and provides the rationale for the techniques. This way, the skills readers learn are transferable to whatever tool they end up using or have access to. For readers that do not know how to navigate certain tools, Wong provides brief Application tutorials as supplemental material.

Borehole Climatology

Climate for the 21st century is expected to be considerably different from the present and recent past. Industrialization growth combined with the increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and massive deforestation are well above the values over the past several decades and are expected to further grow. Air temperature is rising rapidly well as does the weather variability producing frequent extreme events. Six of the ten warmest years occurred in the 1990s. Temperatures predicted for the 21st century ranges well above the present day value. The time period of the last 100-200 years covered by the direct meteorological observations is too short and does not provide material to reliably assess what may happen over the next hundred(s) years. A faithful prediction of the future requires understanding how climate system works, i.e. to reconstruct past climate much further in the past. Borehole paleoclimatology enables climate reconstruction of the past several millennia, unlike proxy methods provides direct past temperature assessment and can well broaden the areal range to the remote regions poorly covered with meteorological observations. Considerable debates have recently focused on the causes of the present-day warming, i.e. to distinguish between the natural and anthropogenic contribution to the observed temperature increase, eventually to quantify their regional distribution. Complex interpretation of borehole data with the proxies and additional socio-economic information can hopefully help. On observed data taken in various places all over the world we demonstrate suitable examples of the interaction between the subsurface temperature response to time changes in vegetation cover, land-use (farming) and urbanization. Precise temperature-time monitoring in shallow subsurface can further provide the magnitude of the present-day warming within relatively short time intervals. As far as we know, there exists so far no book dealing entirely with the subject of the Borehole climatology. Only relatively rarely this method is mentioned in otherwise plentiful literature on climate reconstruction or on climate modelling. There are, however, series of papers focussing on various borehole--climate related studies in numerous journals (e.g. Global and Planetary Change, Climate Change, Tectonophysics, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geophysical Research Letters, etc). Time to time a special issue appears to summarize papers on this topic presented during specialized symposia. Key Features - Description of a new useful alternative paleoclimate reconstruction method - A suitable source of information for those wishing to learn more about climate change - Material for lecturing and use in the classroom - Ample practical examples of borehole temperature inversions worldwide - Ample illustrations and reference list - Authors have a good knowledge of the problem based on more than 20 years of experience, one of them actually pioneered the method Description of a new useful alternative paleoclimate reconstruction method A suitable source of information for those wishing to learn more about climate change Material for lecturing and use in the classroom Ample practical examples of borehole temperature inversions worldwide Ample illustrations and reference list Authors have a good knowledge of the problem based on more than 20 years of experience, one of them actually pioneered the method

The emergence of new soft real-time applications such as DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) and other multimedia devices has caused an explosion in the number of embedded real-time systems in use and development. Many engineers working on these emergent products could use a practical and in depth primer on how to apply real-time theory to get products to market quicker, with fewer problems, and better performance. Real-Time Embedded Systems and Components introduces practicing engineers and advanced students of engineering to real-time theory, function, and tools applied to embedded applications. The first portion of the book provides in-depth background on the origins of real-time theory including rate monotonic and dynamic scheduling. From there it explores the use of rate monotonic theory for hard real-time applications commonly used in aircraft flight systems, satellites, telecommunications, and medical systems. Engineers also learn about dynamic scheduling for use in soft real-time applications such as video on demand, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), and video gaming. Sample code is presented and analyzed based upon Linux and VxWorks operating systems running on a standard Intel architecture PC. Finally, readers will be able to build working robotics, video, machine vision, or VoIP projects using low-cost resources and approaches to gain hands on real-time application experience. Real-Time Embedded Systems and Components is the one single text that provides an in-depth introduction to the theory along with real world examples of how to apply it.

With an innovative, business-model approach, Game Development Essentials: Online Game Development provides the essentials needed to achieve long-term success with Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs). This book takes a significant and valuable departure from traditional game development books by addressing MMOG development as a complex, multi-faceted, service-oriented business, instead of focusing solely on technical, artistic, or design techniques. The resulting multi-dimensional focus allows readers to design their game and organize their development process with the entire business in mind. Coverage includes the key differences between single player games and MMOGs, as well as how the various components of the development process, such as the business model, marketing plan, gaming community and technical constraints, influence one another and determine the success of the MMOG. With increased climate variability, aggravated natural hazards in the form of extreme events are affecting the lives and livelihoods of many people. This work serves as a basis for formulating a ‘preparedness plan’ to ensure the effective policy formulation for planned development. Increased demand and competition with a high degree of variability have forced people to struggle in order to prosper. Good governance and innovative policy formulation are necessary to create a resilient society. This may promote a paradigm shift in the mindset on and perceptions of natural hazards and their impacts on development and growth. This new perspective will make people more concerned about minimizing the loss of life, property, and environmental damage and directly safeguard the development process. This book presents a detailed methodological approach to monitoring meteorological, hydrological, and climate change aspects to help resolve issues related to our environment, resources, and economies in the changing climate situation.
